Steven A. Smith Won’t Stop Talking, by Vinson Cunningham, is an opinion editorial about sports commentator Steven A. Smith discussing Smith’s approach to commenting on anything and everything. Smith’s character is loud and untraditional as his main focus is to make people uncertain about what he is going to say next. This results in controversial and often humorously unrealistic opinions on things, which is harmless when discussing sports however can cause issue when Smith dives into politics. Vinson Cunningham describes Smith’s character with extremely detailed descriptions of Smith’s facial expressions, pronunciation, and appearance. This paints a larger than life character in the reader’s mind that supports Cunningham’s opinion on Smith’s persona. Cunningham also uses intense and detailed diction in order to portray Smith accurately. This is something that writers should take into consideration when creating characters or trying to describe real people.
